Cameroon : Insecurity hinders the perfect celebration of the National Day

The North West and South West Region Highly Affected Due To Insecurity.

Since 1972, the state of Cameroon, has been celebrating the national day every May 20th.  The celebration each year has its theme in relation to the situation of the country. This theme for the national day for this 2021 is The nation army:  Together to meet the challenges of health security and preserve the peace, stability and prosperity of Cameroon.

Looking at this year theme, no one will gainsay the fact that, the authorities or those who chose it are lovers of peace and wish that everyone be secured.

Looking at the present insecurity situation in the country, Cameroonians are forced to ask if truly the country is going to experience peace again. The question some citizens are advancing is what unity without peace or security in the North West and South West Regions of the country. Since 2016, the inhabitants of these two regions have experienced partial peace and security. Majority of the people have become internally displaced persons, some have lost their homes, others businesses, jobs and family members.

The present state of insecurity in these regions is a clear indication that, there is no need to talk about the National Day or day of unity. According to sources at the border town of Ekok in Manyu Division, recently, two separatist fighters lost their lives through the explosives they wanted to plant at the police station. Unfortunately for them, it exploded on them.

The population of Kumba as recorded by the Horizon Newspaper was saved by the military that disconnected explosives or locally made bomb planted in the market by the separatists. The citizens of Mamfe especially those living around Banya, for almost a week now have been living in fear. Sources have it that, the regent chief and some villagers were escorted to the forests by the separatist fighters. They were released only after serious negotiation. Sporadic shooting has become the order of the day around high ways in Mamfe recently. Farmers are scared to visit their farms because of fear of unknown.  Many are of the opinion that, before talking about unity or celebrating the national day in Cameroon, there should be the peace proces
