Society : Douala Hosting Climate Forecasting Application Center

The economic capital of Cameroon Douala has been chosen to host the Central African Climate Prediction Application Center. A project for the 11 countries of the Economic Community for the Central African States (ECCAS) with the objective of producing climate information for decision making in different development sector was launched on the 4th of November in Glasgow Scotland host the Cop26.

With the role of strengthening the capacities of ECCAS member states in providing weather and climate services in actual time, the climate forecasting application center will also help to minimize the adverse effects of climate change and disaster risks. It will as well contribute in the designing, the production, dissemination of information, capacity building of forecasters and technicians of operational services of countries, with a vision in the short and medium term to be designated by the World Meteorological Organization, as a meteorological center of excellence, specialized in monitoring weather and climate phenomena with strong socio-economic and ecological impacts.

At Glasgow, it was revealed that climate change has greatly affected the agriculture and food security, aviation, river and maritime navigation, integrated water resources management, energy and health sectors. The citizens of the ECCAS states are tormented by floods, drought, soil erosion, and landslides which are the impact of changes of climate that are on daily basis intensified.

The mission of the project of the Central African Climate Prediction Application Center launched in Glasgow in relation of Cop26 under the watchful eyes of ECCAS commissioner of Environment, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Development Honore TABUNA is to have a sub- regional strategy for weather and climate monitoring and forecasting. The center that will be based in Douala – Cameroon, will provide political, socio-economic, commercial, scientific and technical levels information that will favour green economy, blue economy and enterprise development without leaving out jobs creation in Central Africa.Cameroon-Society: Douala Hosting Climate Forecasting Application Center.
