Cameroon : National Textbook Commission Accused of Corruption

Prime Minister and Head of Government Refute Allegations.

The National Book Commission aimed at putting order and sanity in the selection of text books and didactic materias in both the basic and secondary eductions sector, one which was enveloped in chaos and corruption at the expense of quality education has been accused by Honorable Njume Peter Ambang to follow the corruption and chaos path that the government has tried to prevent.This accusation was levied against the Commission during the verbal question sesssion put to the Prime Minister and Head of Government Joseph Dion Ngute, on Friday, March 26, 2021, at the Yaounde Conference Center.

Honorable Njume Peter Ambang Clearly staterd  » After a few years of its existence, Mr Prime Minister, to the dismay and disappoitment of many stakeholdrs including members of the eduation committeed of the National Assembly, the national book commission has gone back to the old habits as the ugly lead of corruption, abuse o tuf power and chaos.

The president of the commission took upon himself to inodify the list published by the minister of Basic Education barely two days after « The Prime Ministe and Head of Government was made to understand that last year, two book lists were published and signed by the minister of Basic Education that cause alot of commotion. He pointed out that, due to the mess in the commission, the teachers’ syndicates have written a protest letter to CONAC bringing out what they call gross corruption and irregularities in the commision. Responding to the worries of Honorable Njume Peter Ambang, the Prime Minister and Head of Government rejected all allegations made against the National Textbook and Teaching Materials Accreditation Board of 23 November 2017. To Joseph Dion Ngute, the Prime Minister and Head of Government, the evaluation criterion has been published since March 29, 2018 and known to all stakeholders of the textbook chain.

The evaluation of textbooks proposed by publishers, following call for expression of interest is carried out anonymously by expert evaluators duly appointed by education ministers and textbooks are evaluated on basis of their content, physical presentation and prices with the content being the major criteria.According to Joseph Dion Ngute the Prime Minister and Head of Governement, the National Textbook and Teaching Materials Accreditation Board is serenely pursuing the implementation of textbooks reforms and consolidating the grounds gain.
