The Town Has Witnessed An Inflation Increase Of 5.6%.
The town of Bertoua has been declared the most expensive in Cameroon. The report published recently by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) at the end of June 2021 revealed that, the price index revealed the drop in the price index from 3.6% by the end of June 2020 to 2.2% at the end of June 2021 witnessing a decrease of 1.4% in Buea and 0.6 points from 3.3% to 2.7 % in Bamenda.
The trophy of the most expensive town to live in moves from Buea and Bamenda registered in the half of the year 2020 to Bertoua. In the previous year, the inflation rates of the two towns were 3.6% and 3.3% respectively. According to the statistics of the National Institute of Statistics, Bafoussam which is the capital of the West region came after Buea and Bamenda.
The reason for the expensive standard of living in Buea and Bamenda were hanging on the impact of the separatists demands in the capitals of the South West and North West Regions. Bafoussam taking the third position can be explained from the fact that trade with the North West Region was high, therefore the increase in the price of commodities had a direct impact in the inhabitants of the West Region.
The National Institute for Statistics did not expose the reason for the decline of inflation in Buea and Bamenda now that Bertoua has taken the lead. Some schools of thoughts are of the opinion that the reduction of the attacks by the separatist fighters in the two towns might be the cause. Worthy of note is the fact that some of the fighters have abandoned the two regions to other areas to avoid embarrassment from the security forces.
Results revealed that other capitals like Yaounde experienced an inflation decline from 2.3%, Bamenda from 3.0% to 1.9%, Garoua from 2.5 to 1.9% and Douala from 2.3 to 1.9. At the moment, Bertoua has recorded the highest inflation increase of 5.6%.
